    Davis Cup

Some interesting Davis Cup matchups going on. Of note, the pugnacious Dan Evans had a very nice 3 set win over the demon. Yesterday, Ugo Humbert had a very nice 2 set win over Stan.

I was watching Stan the man this morning. I really wish he had one more major run in him.

    No harm in dreaming, right?

        Pique, er, Davis Cup

        Stan Wawrinaka is candid:

“Thank you Pique”: Stan Wawrinka shares video of atmosphere-less Davis Cup Finals
Said John Millman upon seeing the footage from Manchester, "This isn’t Davis Cup."
Added Mardy Fish, “They killed Davis Cup.

"tan Wawrinka could only laugh out loud Tuesday at what he was seeing.

Representing Switzerland at this week’s Davis Cup Finals group stage in Manchester, England, the three-time major champion shared a depressing glimpse at the ambiance inside the AO Arena for his nation’s tie with France. Vacancy, dreary and melancholy are all words that come to mind in describing the vibe.

Whoa. When I cut and pasted the photo on Tennis.com filled my entire screen ... let's re-enter. Voila!

Stan just took down Cam Norrie to even up the tie at 1-1. The home crowd for Cam very subdued, as Stan gets so much respect from the crowd with his beautiful game.

Very interesting doubles match on tap right now Britain vs Switzerland. Stan right back with Dominic Stricker vs pugnacious Dan Evans and Neal Skupski. Tough ask here for Great Britain.

Davis Cup doubles matches are my favorite Doubles. GB won the 1st set vs Switzerland. To me it was simply GB players much better in doubles. Skupski the best doubles player on court, the pugnacious one is very good also. Both have much better hands and volley skills than Stan and Stricker. Stan's return of serve also a real weakness in doubles. A guy like Skupski, a doubles specialist, only has to be very competent returning off one side obviously. He is very good working off the ad side.

To me, this was the highest level of entertaining as good as it gets doubles matches, and a great win for GB. Skupski and Evans just way better hands and volley skills. More often than not, those skills will win out in doubles.

Speaking of Stan the Man. Stanimal. Stanislaw Wawrinka. He has come out and revealed the ITF...that fabled organization that is the "lack of braintrust" of tennis...is paying people to go to Davis Cup matches and cheer "enthusiastically" for the hometown team. Big Time Wrestling anyone? Tennis is in a downwards spiral resembling a toilet flush. Metaphoring a number of current events being played out on the world stage. Ah...to be the voice in the wilderness. What a luxury!

Frances "Big Foe" Tiafoe explodes in uncontrollable fit of anger on match point due to a bit of a questionable objection on his part. USA loses Davis Cup against Netherlands. Behavior unbecoming of Davis Cup tradition. But tradition is out the window now. It's Big Time Wrestling with Big Foe. NBA style rant against the machine of refereedom. Wowsa. One minute he is hugging Stan Wawrinka in an all time cuddly moment in the U. S. Open lockerroom and the next out of control on an international stage. Not a good look Frances. This story didn't get much traction. I suspect that it is all too clear why it didn't. Racism.
