Great article with fascinating details. My dad played Slew at Southern Open in Mobile before he was USTA president. He said he was a bigger than life personality, a very good, but cocky player and he wanted to knock the cigar out of his mouth which Slew smoked during changeovers. But, there is no denying what Slew did for tennis and the Open. -
Superb article and thought provoking history of the U. S. Open. Superb!
Here is the last men's final played on grass pitting Jimmy Connors vs. Ken Rosewall. 1974. Ironically, early on there is a visual stating that the match was played at Flushing Meadows, New York.
