Craig Tiley, the longtime Tennis Australia chief executive and Australian Open tournament director, has reportedly been named the new chief executive of the U.S. Tennis Association.
One could and many will write at length speculating about the impact. A blissfully shorter version:
Tiley's reign at the Australian Open has been a commercial success { except for his disastrous $100 million loss on the ill-conceived Covid year event} and under his leadership the event has profited, not only from growing event revenues, but extracting more government funding through threats that the event would go somewhere else, say China.
What will Tiley's impact be on developmental programs the USTA leads in the US?
Will his cozy relationship with the PTPA impact the US Open?
What will his relationship be to Eric Butorac, who remains the USO Tour Director?
Will the man who put corporate names on three Australian Open courts, but left Margaret Court intact to the dismay of some, dare to rename Ash?
Why did the USTA have to go to Australia for its CEO? Will there be a tariff on this import.
Stay tuned.
