First Top 10 ATP Double Bagel in 10 Years

Berrettini Gives Medvedev Une Bicyclette (ou ve'lo)

Matteo Berrettini, the oft injured, but powerful Italian was 0-3 vs Daniil Medvedev going into their Monte Carlo match Wednesday, but, in the spirit of Monte Carlo, he saw Medy's zero and doubled it -- 6-0 6-0, which is either a double bagle or as the French much more colorfully call it "Une Bicyclette". You have to imagine the wheels.

In fairness, it was Medy's first match on clay all year ... Nah, I tried to soften it but this is brutal. It was the first time in Medy's entire career he'd lost a match without winning single game. And the last time a top-10 ATP player lost in a double bagel was ten years ago, when David Goffin defeated Tomas Berdych. In fact, this was only the fifth time a top-10 opponent has been defeated by a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline since the ATP Rankings began in 1973. Here's what Medy might be hearing in his dreams tonight: Cue Queen with "Bicycle Race" 1978, like to YT vid.

Highlights, or if your a Medy fan, lowlights

I just had to search so I might as well share this.

    1) It's been over 10 years since a Top 10 player was bagled on the ATP
    2) Only five (5) top 10 players have been bagled in the entire history of the ATP (since 1973)
    3) Coincidentally only five (5) players have EVER been bailed in a slam aka major, regardless of ranking.

    Here are details

    Slams with Some Jam

There have been five (5) "Triple Bagels" (6-0, 6-0, 6-0) in Grand Slam history, there are also exactly five of those in the Open Era:
    Spear d. Contet (1968),
    Nov?ček d. Bengoechea (1987), E
    dberg d. Eriksson (1987),
    Lendl d. Moir (1987), and
    Bruguera d. Champion (1993).)

    Top Ten'ers' ATP Double Bagels
There have been thousands of double bagels in general ATP play, but only five times has a player ranked in the Top 10 failed to win a single game in a match. Here they are in chronological order

    1) Damir Keretić def. Yannick Noah (No. 10)
    Score: 6-0, 6-0
    Date: May 17, 1983

    2) Ivan Lendl def. Jimmy Connors (No. 2)
    Score: 6-0, 6-0
Date: May 12, 1984 (sometimes cited as April)
Event: WCT Tournament of Champions (Forest Hills, NY), Semifinal

    3) Roger Federer def. Gast?n Gaudio (No. 9)
    Score: 6-0, 6-0
    Date: November 14, 2005
Event: Tennis Masters Cup (Shanghai, China), Semifinal

    4) David Goffin def. Tom?š Berdych (No. 8)
    Score: 6-0, 6-0
    Date: May 13, 2016
Event: Rome Masters (Italian Open), Round of 16

And this week in Monte Carlo.

    5) Matteo Berrettini def. Daniil Medvedev (No. 10)

Fascinating how this happened with these two great players. What do others think occurred in the match that led to such a score?

Good question. Medy's presser made it sound like he'd like to know

In the partial match I saw, Medy "served pants" to quote Sir Andy, at 36% firsts, but otherwise Medvedev didn't seem off. He was playing his game, but Matteo kept pounding them back hard starting with mainly returns of second serves. Finally, Medy started rushing the net to change things up and then it got out of hand.

Perhaps it's just a case of a player not having his A game running into someone on fire?
