I got the medial kind, two months ago, two days after tennis. Sharp pains all over the place, but mostly gone now. All I can think of is that I backhand volleyed a fairly high rocket forehand. It felt like a clean hit, not off-center, but my shoulder must have been too high.

Nice article, but if it is medial epicondylitis that you got, it's probably not from that high backhand volley. That would give you LATERAL epicondylitis, as it points out in the article.

Almost anything can cause it. Medial is usually forehands and serves.
