    Tennisplayer on NY Times Site

    Guys,

Here's some fun stuff we did with the NY Times website, sharing our footage and also the thoughts of some of our writers.

Brian Gordon did the serve analysis. Craig O'Shannessy did the serve and forehand strategy piece--if you don't recognize his name that's because his first article is coming up!

          Short and sweet! Serve +1.

Points won returning second serve: http://www.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/MatchFacts.aspx

          % matches played
          1 Nadal, Rafael 58 61
          2 Djokovic, Novak 58 59
          3 Ferrer, David 57 50
          4 Murray, Andy 56 42
          5 Berdych, Tomas 55 54

          RETURN GAMES WON
          Pos Player % Matches
          1 Djokovic, Novak 39 59
          2 Murray, Andy 37 42
          3 Nadal, Rafael 35

          2nd SERVE POINTS WON
          Pos Player % Matches
          1 Nadal, Rafael 57 61
          2 Djokovic, Novak 57 59
          3 Federer, Roger 57 52
          4 Isner, John

Fed. is 20th, in winning second serve return points, and 16th, winning return games in total. So what that tells us is, you are only as good as your second serve defense, not your second serve return offense if your name is Federer, not Joker or Nadal! Stats tell us: first strike of the ball will determine who wins or loses, whether you are returning or serving. You will never lose if you return and serve better than your opponent, so why aren't most of us just practicing those two shots more? It hurts to serve, and it's boring to return, so most just hit and giggle down the middle.

Don't think so. But that Rafa clip came straight from our High Speed Stroke Archive.
