Thanks... I keep saying thanks to everybody...

Got home today from the hospital.

    My timeline was:
    - operated last Wednesday 13:00
    - got out of bed Thursday morning
    - took my first walk on Friday (had to be helped in/out of bed) with crutches
    - was autonomous on Saturday: could get up alone, take a shower, took walks around the hospital
    - took my first stairs with crutches on Sunday
    - was released today this afternoon and am now home....

Tomorrow I start with my new project: get back in shape.

I have physiotherapy sessions, will walk/walk/walk, do hip recovery excercises at home and start working out with my dumbells for upper body strength.

No cement was used, the head is ceramic.

Had a great doctor, says he is convinced that with my positive attitude my recovery will be rapid.
    Regards, Phil

Glad it all went well. Exercises, I heard, are the quickest road to recovery... do them to the letter, Phil.

Can walk without crutches now around home, but am using one crutch for walks outdoors. Walk about 2 hours daily. Have started with rehab excercises, have a good trainer. Do rehab with him 3 times a week for an hour, and excercise at home daily for about 90 minutes. Doing excercise bike for about 20 minutes daily. Mobility is improving, can tie my shoelaces...
          Regards, Phil

            Keep training

Glad to hear your recovery is on track and things are progressing well. Keep at it. You'll know you've cracked it once you can move around like the blokes in this clip.

Thanks... basically the exercises I am doing daily at home. The rehab exercises I do with my therapist are tougher...

How long before you can play tennis again?

My friend is going for a hip replacement next month. He's worried sick about the op...hates pain...don't we all. Is it very painful after the op?

                    Rehab and Prehab

                    Phil,
This guy, Dr. Robert Klapper has a program on ESPN710 radio Saturday mornings here in LA, The Weekend Warrior. Seems to be involved with a lot of pro athletes. He is a big advocate of water prehab and rehab. I think the rehab program might be in the book listed here:

Stotty, that book is exactly the thing your friend might want to look at.

Probably in 4-6 weeks time, I would guess. Going for a checkup 8th of April and based on the X-ray, my hip doctor will let me know if I am ready for tennis, but I will probably feel it myself.

No, I felt practically no pain after the operation most of the time, except when I had to sit and get up. I was off pain-killers two weeks after the opertion. Your friend need not worry, nowadays good clinics provide you with medicines that you feel no pain.

Sorry to hear that larry. Are you going to have to operate?

Have been walking without crutches for two weeks. Can take relatively long walks now. Will continue with rehab for another month. Hope to hit the tennis courts sometime in May....

Just played tennis again for the first time after my operation. Played 90 minutes. Groundstrokes, volleys, and some tiebreaks. Felt surprisingly well. Moved alright, just did not go for extreme balls. So there is life after a hip operation after all..
