The Power of a Good Demonstration

Here we see the late Lew Hoad giving service lessons back in the early 1970s. It shows how powerful a good demo can be even when students are relatively limited. You can see Lew's students trying to emulate his lovely rhythm and, relative to their level of play, succeeding reasonably well.

A good demonstration is probably the most powerful tool a coach possesses.

And yes Lew does footfault...but none of his students do so let's not worry about that.

Lew did have one of the best service motions ever. Right there with Pancho.

It was a lovely motion. A lot of the classic era motions are aesthetically pleasing to look at. You got more 'leaning' and less 'bending' and 'driving up' back then. These days it's like players care much less about weight transfer and swaying into a serve and much more about hitting the key positions and being explosive.
